- This program is shareware. You may distribute it at will, provided you
-
- 1) do not charge any money for it,
- 2) distribute it WITH the documentation, and
- 3) do not change the program or documentation in ANY WAY.
-
- If you find the program useful, I think a small contribution to my bank account
- would be a nice gesture. Say, $10 or so, sent to the address at the bottom
- of this file. CDLISTNx.PRG is by no means complete and cold hard cash is good
- incentive for me to spruce it up and add the features that it is plainly
- lacking.

-
- 1. Introduction
-
- CDLISTNx.PRG is a small program that will control a CD-ROM drive and
- allow you to playback audio CDs. There are a couple shareware CD player
- programs out there, but they require a CD-ROM drive that conforms to the
- SCSI-2 standard. My CD_ROM drive is not SCSI-2 compliant, so I wrote
- CDLISTNx.PRG to play my CDs. I have an IBM 7210 CD drive which was produced
- a couple years ago for IBM's RISC/6000 series of computers. As far as I can
- tell it is compatible with the Toshiba XM-3131 and XM-3232 CD drives.
- They are not SCSI-2 compliant, but they do have an audio jack on the front
- and can playback audio CDs given the proper commands. If CDLISTNx.PRG
- does not work for your hardware setup, you might want to try the other
- CD player programs on GEnie. CD drives can be finicky animals and just
- 'cos those programs didn't work for me, doesn't mean they won't work for you.
-
- 2. The "cover yer butt" section
-
- I've downloaded enough software to have noticed that almost EVERYONE puts
- in a disclaimer of some kind. I copped this one from a public domain
- program. It seems to have enough legal mumbo jumbo to discourage any
- litigious griper.
-
- This software is shareware. It is provided on an as-is basis,
- with absolutely no warantees, either express or implied, including, but not
- limited to performance, usefulness, reliability, fitness for a particular
- purpose or merchantability. The user assumes any and all risk involved in
- the use of this software. In no event will the author be liable for
- direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages resulting from the
- use of, or inability to use, this software.
-
- So there!
-
-
- 3. A few notes.
-
- CDLISTNx.PRG requires an ICD host adapter to communicate to your CD drive
- via the SCSI connection. I've heard that the ICD hardware is not required
- if you have their Pro Utilities software, but I cannot vouch for this.
-
- CDLISTNx.PRG looks at its own name to determine which SCSI ID is allocated
- to your CD drive. Rename the program by changing the 'x' in "CDLISTNx.PRG"
- to the SCSI ID of your CD drive. For example, if your CD drive is SCSI ID
- number 5 on your SCSI chain, rename CDLISTNx.PRG to CDLISTN5.PRG. (My drive
- is SCSI ID#2 on my system, so that is the name of the program I uploaded
- to GEnie.) YOU MUST RENAME THE PROGRAM TO REFLECT YOUR SYSTEM CONFIGURATION!
- If all this makes no sense to you, stop right here and find someone who
- knows what the hack a SCSI ID is to help you. If you set the SCSI ID
- incorrectly, you could affect the other devices on the SCSI bus in
- strange, unpredictable and potentialy damaging ways.
-
- 4. So do something
-
- To get things started connect your CD drive to your systems SCSI bus
- and select an appropriate ID. Turn on your drive and then the rest of
- your system. Insert an audio CD into the drive. The drive lights might
- blink for a few seconds as the drive initializes.
-
- Run your appropriately named version of CDLISTNx.PRG. It will take a second
- or two to reinitialize the CD drive and then you'll be presented with a simple
- CD control dialog. You may get some alerts telling you the CD drive is not
- ready. If so, check your connections and make sure an audio CD is in the
- drive, and retry the initialization. If you can't get past the alert box,
- you are out of luck. Your CD drive does not respond to the commands that
- mine does, and CDLISTNx.PRG will not work for you. Sorry.
-
- If you get to the CD control dialog, you're probably in good shape. At
- the top of the dialog a line identifies the device that was found at the
- SCSI ID specified in the program name. Make sure it's your CD drive.
- The controls are pretty simple. STOP stops the CD from playing and returns
- it to track #1. PLAY plays the CD starting at the selected track. PAUSE
- will pause the CD (resume by pressing the PLAY button). EJECT ejects the
- CD. The fast forward and fast reverse buttons (labeled "<<" and ">>")
- do not function in this version of CDLISTNx.PRG. The "Elapsed Time" and
- "SELECT TRACKS" features are also disabled (...like I said at the beginning
- "features it is plainly lacking.") The CD track selection is made
- with the up and down arrows on each side of the track number. While a CD is
- playing you can select a different track to play and then press the PLAY button
- to move to the newly selected track. When the CD starts playing it will play
- from the selected track to the end of the CD.
-
- One final note. The program does not know when you insert a new CD into the
- drive. When you switch CDs you have to press the STOP button so the program
- will reread the CDs Table Of Contents and update its track info.
-
- That's about it. I've been using CDLISTNx.PRG for a couple weeks now and
- it seems pretty solid. I hope it works for you. If you do run into problems,
- you can reach me via GEnie, and I'll try to help you out.
